Rehearsals for Ophelia Must Die are in full speed at the moment. It’s a funny thing to see your work explode through creativity.
There have been a number of changes which James and I hadn’t really anticipated. Mostly this has come down to content and the potential to look beyond our original stimulus of just Ophelia as a character.
There are so many parallels between a whole number of female characters and Ophelia that our work soon explored beyond our central heroine.
Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf and Cathy from Wuthering Heights have now entered the playing field. Their fragile states of minds and sad deaths, mostly caused by mental breakdown and suicide, has created a wealth of inspiration for our work. Ophelia is still a central point but she is now made more tragic in light of the others.
For James and I it poses more questions as to how best to portray women on the verge of suicide whilst not coming across as men in drag! No easy feat, I tell you. This would be where subtlety is our friend, and we work well with it.
Three weeks until we perform… And each rehearsal we shape and mold the work further.
